LG announces new sensor that smartens up your old appliances
News from CNET:

LG’s new SmartThingQ sensor attaches to compatible home appliances to smarten them up.

LG LG has already said it’ll show off a new tablet at this week’s IFA convention in Berlin. But that’s far from the only gadget up the company’s sleeve, as on Monday the South Korean electronics giant announced its new SmartThinQ Sensor.

The sensor attaches to compatible home appliances to make them “smart-aware,” feeding information to the user through a corresponding SmartThinQ app.

According to LG, if the device is attached to a washing machine it will notify the user when a laundry cycle is done. Similarly, if you stick it to your fridge, LG claims that the SmartThinQ will let you know when food is about to expire.

The combination of the sensor and app will also provide a remote control function for appliances like air conditioners.

LG will also be showing its Wi-Fi enabled Smart Lightwave Oven, for which users can set the temperature and cooking time through their smartphones, and Smart Air Conditioner, which can also be controlled via mobile device.

How To Help Appliances Live a Long Life
News from Care2.com:

My mother’s refrigerator lasted over 20 years. Sure, she used an ice pick to help defrost its freezer compartment a couple of times a year, and the thing was tiny by today’s standards. But it was a workhorse and probably would still be humming if she hadn’t remodeled the kitchen and replaced everything. My side-by-side refrigerator, however, has needed repairs three times in the past 15 years. Insulation between the refrigerator and freezer is so bad that whatever I place on the adjacent wall – eggs, milk, OJ – freezes instead of chills.

Appliance lifespans differ. But, in general, here’s how long an appliance should last, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

  • Refrigerator: 14 to 17 years.
  • Dishwasher: 10 years.
  • Dryer: 14 years.
  • Washer: 13 years.
  • Electric range: 17 years.
  • Gas range: 19 years.
  • Microwave: 11 years.

However, these are general predictions that depend on how well and intelligently you take care of your home machines. Here are some cleaning and maintenance tips that will help prolong the life of your appliances.
